During the 1940s many rural areas were getting electricity, and for Country folks first things came first: Lights in the house, an electric pump for the water well, a refrigerator, a radio and on and on. Grownups were good at creating their own fun at days end or on Sunday evenings. Anytime there was spare time on hand, a house party, or picnic or baseball game would break out.
Toys, for children to play with, were way down on the list when it came to the necessities of life. Most kids had to fend for themselves when it came to having fun. Many times the only toy a child had was one created from their own imagination, driven by the fact that the family had no money for store-bought toys. I was one of the lucky kids; my dad had rather help me make toys than play grown-up games.
