Figure 4 triggers are very efficient and work well even in foul weather. More sensitive triggers, to being sprung, can be made from thin strips of finished wood. However, if one is particular about the sticks he gathers he can make very good ones from available tree limbs.

Bois 'd Arc Wedge and Maul
Splitting wedges made from the fork of a bois 'd arc limb are very good for splitting fence post from bois 'd arc trees. They are also good for making the first split on large diameter sections from oak trees being split into firewood. Steel wedges or splitting mauls are better for splitting off the smaller sticks of firewood.
